It is the office that deserves respect and the man who serves must earn the respect.

Respect is something that is earned. So while a person may deserve it, it should be beacuse of their actions not their title.

Both deserve respect of course. The President is a symbol of the American people. He represents the USA wherever he goes. But respect doesn't mean Americans are duty-bound to praise him all the time. Constructive criticism is a hallmark of a strong and vibrant democracy.

Old problem. I think the office deserves respect regardless of who is seated at any given time. It is sort of like the military. You may not like or respect your superiors in rank personally, but the rank must have respect or the whole system falls apart. It is difficult sometimes, but necessary.

I'll respect any president at the start of their term, they get a clean slate from me. However they can, and often do, lose it unfortunately

The office derserves the respect. If the occupant acts in an appropriate manner and is a good leader for the country, he deserves additional (or personal) respect based upon his own actions.
