Why does playstation have rights over the Final Fantasy series?

Playstation (Sony) doesn't have rights over the Final Fantasy series. I would think that would be clear through the multi-platform FF XI, the FF IIIj and FF IV remake and FF XII: Revenant Wings. And of course, the FF I, II, V, and VI re-releases for the GBA. SquareEnix (SquareSoft at the time) did decide to move to the Playstation when they found that the Nintendo 64 wasn't going to be powerful enough for their vision with Final Fantasy VII, but it had nothing to do with Sony exchanging money (at least, over the table as far as we can tell. Is it conspiracy theory time?) But you can rest assured that SquareEnix is going to put the next Final Fantasy wherever they please since it is their intellectual property.
