I'm so torn, it's such a hard decision.... Depp.

Old school. Gene wilder is much better. The first one is classic. The remake was so different from the original. The first was the best hands down. It was funnier than the new one. Come on debsmooth. Don't you remember the Snazzberries?
-
Myself I just saw the original and it's just so much better. I was impressed all over again with how Wilder really rode the line between charming and downright scary. The film is beautifully cast. The sets and effects were magical without being overwhelming and even the music was cool. A better film than Burton's. Sorry Johnny.

They're both good in their own, different, ways. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
-
Gene Wilder. I found that Depp's performance was a little to quirky for my liking. Just my opinion.
-
Old school definitely!
-
Anything with Johnny Depp gets whatever it wants from me!
-
Old school. Gene did a way better job at portraying Wonka's unique personality then Depp's disappointing performance. But the whole new movie was horrible in my opinion, completely missing the weird charm of the original, replacing it with flashy but completely lifeless stuff in respect to the original. And where the hell was that creepy boat ride with all the mental hallucinations?! I was definitely saddened. They should have picked Marilyn Manson as Wonka like they originally planned on, it might have at least given the film some essence of the original delightfully sometimes creepy and quirky fashion then THAT sickening remake. I love Johnny Depp and he is a very good actor, but he seems made for very specific roles, and Willy Wonka was not one of them at all.
-
Gene Wilder, I like Jonny Depp, but I think he was on an acid trip for the filming...
-
Old school, that movie is classic. I was surprised that the new one was not as bad as I thought it would be. I like Depp, but I do not like Tim Burtons work.
-
Gene Wilder projects playful menace so much more proportionately than Depp does. Depp's performance is almost like a caricature of the original. Wilder's urbanity is much more satisfying than Depp's camp grimaces. Your mileage may, of course, vary.
-
Gene Wilder of course. Johnny Depp's was really strange.
-
Gene Wilder was great as Wonka. Depp was creepy.
-
Gene Wilder any day. I like Johnny Depp but sometimes his experimenting with characters gets out of control. His Willy Wonka was creepy and looked disturbingly like Annie Lennox.
-
I'd have to say Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka. Although, Johnny Depp's version is more true to the book, Wilder's is far more catchy in my opinion. I ahve half the mind of putting up this question on an online competition site like Ibeatyou.com. Hmmmm......
-
as much as I love Johnny Depp - the original one with Gene Wilder is by far my favourite
-
Johnny Depp has the disadvantage of not being on mind altering drugs, but ultimately wins over because of Gene Wilder's inability to realise the pedophillic undertones inherent in his character.
-
Although I like Gene Wilder better when comparing them side by side, I must say, they both have their merits and I can appreciate them both as separate movies.
-
Old school definitely. The music was repetitive sure but the originality of the work will never be questioned.
-
Old School.
-
Gene Wilder - classic. Johnny Depp looked awful. It was a disappointment.
-
I actually felt bored while I watched the new version in a theatre. I sat through the whole thing anyway though. I have never walked out of a movie, although I did come close with this one.
-
i liked the old one better but i love johhny depp it was just like the same thing so i was like okay point please!! lol
-
Old school. Why they even attempted a remake I'll never know.
-
I actually like them both for these reasons: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder (1971) is a musical that I have been watching for years growing up. It has great sentimental value to me, as my family would sit together with popcorn when it came on the television about once a year. We all loved the movie and the music and having a reason to get together and turn off the rest of the world. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp (2005) is truer to the original storyline of the book by Roald Dahl (1964). I am a bit of a purist, I guess, but I always appreciate the art of keeping on storyline as much as possible when screenwriters are drawing from a great book/story.

The original was best
-
Old school. The redo was a glossy mess. It also suffers from what I like to call "Originitis". Wonka in the first film was a mysterious character. His methods, his nature and even his sanity were questionable, even until the end. I don't really care what was originally in the book. Print does not always transfer correctly to celluloid. Wonka may have been interesting in the novel because of his origin but in the film he is interesting because he is a mystery. I had other problems with the redo but I'm sure my distaste for it begins with the above.

Well...from my uneducated, never read the book point of view, I would say that Gene Wilder was the better of the two. I would never doubt Mr. Burton or Mr. Depp's work, I just have that preference. According to my girlfriend, Johnny Depp's performance was more like the actual character in the book. I guess we have to give Johnny some props for that. I am glad they made a second one though for people to decide between.
-
Definitely Old school with Gene Wilder. Johnny Depp - I recognized his acting in the movie rather than enjoyed an old time favorite movie. Not every movie is a good candidate for a remake, and although it's a great movie, it was better off left alone. Johnny Depp did not do it justice. Gene Wilder - He played the part extremely well, touching each emotion and sarcastic remark perfectly!
-
Old School. I absolutely can not stand any film directed by Tim Burton.
-
gene wilder definitely. johnny depp seemed liked he was going to rape the children. a little too michael jackson-y for my taste. remakes can never beat the original.
-
Johnny Depp version please.
-
Old school definitely
-
Gene Wilder will always be Mr. Willy Wonka Himself portrayed as a strange kind sensitive lunatic inventor loved by us all, Johnny depp portrayal was in very poor taste (Lousy) We need to embrace the wonderful job that Gene Wilder did as Mr Willy Wonka I will always treasure my memories of seeing him as Willy Wonka in the 70's on the big screen My answer is definately for Gene Wilder
-
Gene Wilder. Johnny Depp's acting wuz plain creepy
-
Old School Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder was a much nicer and kinder Willy Wonka and that is what made him a better Willy Wonka and that character should be nice and kind to get the children excited about being in a chocolate factory.

OLD OLD OLD!!!

The old one MOST DEFINETLY!!! Johnny Depp is a good actor, but the way Gene Wilder pushed the character to perfection is phenominal! The catchty riddles and quotes are halarious, And The old one is a loveable and threatening but in a GREAT way!. The new one in my perspective is more villianis, and scary. The 'surprise' ending is not the fact Charlie wins the factory but meets his father? Wow, totally Raold Dahl<--- (sarcasim), stupids! In all, the loveable, wonderful, bombastic, sweetamastic, insiractional, Wonka is.... Gene Wilder
