I am told in the US Flag stars are added to represent the number of States in USA. If so could some one tell me, what the stripes represent for?

I was always told that the red stripes represent the blood that was shed in wars for our freedom and the white represents purity and the stars represent the number of states.I know that when a Marine gets his dress blues with the red stripes down the side of his legs they call it blood stripes.

The thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen colonies, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia. It used to be 1 stripe and star for each state, but with each new state that joined, another stripe and star had to be added. Eventually, there were so many stripes, it was decided that there would be only thirteen stripes to honor the first thirteen colonies and just a star for each state.
