I'm not aware that he ever taught such a doctrine. However, I have heard that he held such an opinion and that such was not terribly remarkable for his time.

The state of scientific understanding back then was not what it is today. With respect to the Moon, it should be remembered that it was not until 1837 that it was firmly established that the Moon did not have an atmosphere. Up to that point it was generally thought that the dark patches of the moon were seas and scientists seriously considered the possibility that the Moon was inhabited (http://tinyurl.com/7yuka ; http://tinyurl.com/6f53v4). Thus, the New York Sun was able to perpetrate the Great Moon Hoax in 1835 when it published a series of articles claiming that observations of these inhabitants had actually been made using a new telescope (http://tinyurl.com/5kojm6 ; http://tinyurl.com/63lqgo ; http://tinyurl.com/6ao7hw). So, if Joseph Smith and Brigham Young ever did make such statements, they were only stating that which was a commonly held belief of the time.
