That is an interesting question. And I don't think it's state by state. I had a cat that was a diabetic and needed shots twice a day. Some pharmacies would let me just get the insulin, syringes and hypo needles without question, yet others in the same town said they needed a confirmation from our vet.

you can always order online w/o any prescription, just have to wait a couple days which sucks if you need it right now
Allegromedical.com is a good one, good prices, no questions asked

I can tell you in Columbus, OH its very difficult to get syringes w/o a prescription or having a bottle of insulin on you. i used to have no problem getting them but even Krogers who used to sell them to me recently said they can no longer do it....

My mom is diabetic but doesn't always have a valid (non-expired) prescription. I know that in Maryland and Florida you have to show proof of prescription in order to buy syringes. In West Virginia, you may purchase them with or without the Rx. However, if you do not have an Rx (or a pharmacy that knows you and knows there is an Rx on file) you WILL have to show identification and sign a form - much like buying Sudafed.

Purchasing medications and supplies for pets is handled entirely different and the laws also vary buy state.

Oh, there is a 3 month max on how many syringes you are allowed to purchase. It's more than enough for most diabetics but may be cutting it close if used for "alternative purposes." Syringes are dispensed legally OTC in Canada and you may buy up to a three month supply at a time. Again, you are limited to a preset number of needles during this time. The syringes I've seen online in Canada are slightly different than the standard needles available in the US but not by much, it seems like they're made so that it's harder to use more than once. Which is great physically but sucks when a person is short on cash.

For example, my mom receives a little more than a thousand dollars a month for disability. For a long time her medications cost twice this amount - and that doesn't even get into mortgages, household costs, etc (she became disabled from several serious diseases at 49, now after a stroke at 55 there is absolutely no chance she will ever be able to take care of herself again.) And with all of her medical problems my father has a hard time working in any capacity.

All that aside, since most people don't necessarily live under these circumstances, the syringes from Canada cost about $35US per box before shipping (100 needles) as opposed to ~$20 per box in West Virginia. And here you can buy them by the bag rather than the box.

I would do some searches on syringes in your state - though it does look like you can buy the OTC in California in small amounts. You will have better luck in smaller pharmacies, especially if you find a "mom and pop" type pharmacy. I've found two methods to be particularly successful - either go in completely exasperated (my mom just came to town, is diabetic and forgot enough syringes for her trip...I'm not sure of the type [since there are several sizes] and just ask to see the boxes or bags since you "know" what they look like but not what size or what they're called. Act frantic and upset that you don't have an Rx as the needles were forgotten to be packed and worried that they will need to be reused.) The other option is to go in acting overly confident asking for the exact syringe you want (say one bag of 100 long.) This one works best if you do abbreviate, not 100cc long needle - just 100 long. If pressed, it's honestly best to say it's for a diabetic family member. My mom can honestly not get out of the house easily so my dad and I both regularly buy for her and as a former heroin addict I have bought plenty for myself. But it's best to use a relative in need - they will rarely check and if they do just deflect saying you don't have the prescribing doctor's info but you will bring it back, and you don't have the Rx because they are on vacation. Just good to keep your name and ID off any books, IMO. Hope this helps and be safe whatever the reason for the question.
