Question

Help answer this question below.

I read that SPAM was the most popular (or most consumed) meat in America. Is this true? I find the stuff revolting and haven't eaten it in 50 years..but I notice in Hawaii that it seems to be a big seller.

  • WAS is the key word. During WWII, when meat rationing was in effect, it was a lot more popular. Not any more.

Hawaii, being an island, had more shipping and storage issues when it came to meat. So a larger percentage of their available meat was canned, and it became a larger part of their culture than on the mainland.

SPAM is huge in Hawaii. They even have SPAM festivals there. Each person in Hawaii supposedly eats like 20 tins of the stuff.

If you haven't visited it, you MUST visit the SPAM website it is very funny, laugh out loud funny!

  • I don't know that it's the "most" popular these days. I was very popular when I was a kid...I loved it then (loved it fried in a skillet, like I also liked my bologna). I don't know that last time I ever ate it. I eat much healthier these days.

I keep some around for emergencies, when there's nothing else in the larder and I want a snack without going out. It's not my favorite choice but it is a tolerable bellyful when it's properly fried and buried in some vegetables. Never been to Hawaii, so can't comment on what they're eating now, but I can imagine getting tired of mahi-mahi, eventually.

That's a funny question but I guess it is sooo true!

My wife is from the Philippines and she sends that stuff back whenever she sends a gift package. I thought that was odd but that and those puff ball type sponges, actually I think their nylon, anyway off topic.

I guess other cultures think more of spam then those of us born here in the USA.

In Hawaii, during WW-2, it was just about the only thing available besides fish. (island is isolated, war going on, other priorities for ships and planes, etc). I wonder if it's a leftoverture from WW-2.

I've never had spam and hope never to have to eat it. I think anything that shares its name with malicious junk email can't be very good.

I've only tried it once and it made me sick to my stomach. Never again. I don't know anyone who eats it.

From what I understand about Hawaii and Spam,....The main reason they consume more Spam than any other state is because it is an island without any pork. No pigs on the island.

In Hawaii they're crazy about it. But on the continent not so much. Vienna Sausages and Beenie Weenie are faves among the redneck population. Just go in any bait store and you'll see an entire aisle devoted to them.

Beef is the most consumed meat in USA.

In the past few decades chicken has been on a rise, nearly reaching the amount of consumption of beef.
