Mormonism is like a counterfeit hundred-dollar bill. It looks much like the real thing and many people think it is, but someone who really knows what genuine money is like will realize that it's not the same. It's not that Mormons aren't good Americans and sincerely religious people. But their teachings about the nature of God, Christ, mankind, salvation, everlasting life, and many other important areas are so different that it is a different religion entirely--even if it goes by the same name. We call a different religion a "cult" if it closely resembles Christianity, but isn't. The word "sect" is used for "sections" or branches of orthodox Christianity. Joseph Smith would have agreed, but from the opposite point of view, since he condemned all the churches, all their leaders, and all their teachings. Either he's right, or the people who've been known as Christians for 1800 years before he was even born are right, and he was a cultist.

Mormons have created their own account of the Bible, so some chose to call them a cult. They have rewritten the original, and for me the only Bible. Note: I have respect for all Mormons, I only have different beliefs. I personally do not like to classify other religions as cults.
