I guess so they can seperate Ms. and Mrs.. Also because Mrs. means you're a married female.

Because is it an abbreviation of "MistReSs," as in "Mistress Smythe, wouldst thou be so kind as to proffer me yon candlestick?" Thus we can distinguish between a "Miss" (no R) and a "Mrs." (R).

Mr is the abbreviation for Mister Mrs is for Mistress. The R was always present. Ms is a term made up by 1960/70s feminists who decided they wanted a neither Miss nor Mrs prefix. This may be the reason you have asked the question
