microwave it. -- andywho is right about it being soft for only as long as it stays warm . I didn't interpret the question as asking how to soften it for the long term.

Use a piece of paper towel or a clean cloth and wipe it with milk. Just so the cloth is damp, keep doing this until it reaches your desired softness.

Get the outside of it wet by moving under running water in the sink. You're just trying to dampen the outside not soak it. Wipe excess water off with your hand, not a paper towel, so that you leave some water on the outside. Please the load in a pre-heated 275 degree oven for five minutes. Turn off the heat, and take out the bread whenever you are ready to use it. If you've got an exposed end from a previuos meal, you'll want to cut that off. I do this all the time, since my wife and I rarely go through an entire loaf at one meal. This process works great for crusty loaves that are a few days old, but won't ressurect week neglected bread. Give it a try.
