  • My guess would be that if you are really sick, going to the ER will get you the critical attention you need. They might not have the equipment to help you in their office. So rather than have you die waiting, they would rather have you seek urgent care.
  • Primary care doctors are reluctant to treat people whom they fear have serious issues which will require more intensive care in a hospital setting (such as breathing difficulty which may require a breathing tube, chest pain which will require an immediate workup for heart-attack, or a signs of a developing stroke, which will require IV medications and x-ray imaging of the brain.
  • I believe that your primary care Dr. already had to many people to see and couldn't fit you in right away. That is most likely why she referred you to the ER.I don't believe that your Dr. didn't want to help you, but Dr's have to see a minimum amount of patients per hr and don't have any spare time for a walk in. My brother is a Dr at Kaiser and is required to handle so many patients per hr. He doesn't even have the time to discuss any other problem with you except what you came there for and will suggest that you make another appointment for it.The days of Dr. Welby have been over for years.
