  • It depends on the technology. Types are zinc carbon, alkaline, nickel metal hydride (NiMH), nickel cadmium (NiCad) and more. The "D" just refers to the physical size. So a D battery has essentially the same chemistry as an A, AA, C, or N as long as they are the same type. Simply put a battery has 2 electrodes consisting of an anode (- side) and a cathode (+ side). Between the 2 electrodes is an electrolyte which is a chemical solution that allows current to flow. The makeup of the electrodes and electrolyte is determined by the battery technology.
