For the sides and base, mahogany is the usual choice. Tops are best made with sitka spruce or Koa. (Martin has been building instruments like this since 1938). Check e-bay under luthier supplies. There are several reliable sellers with nice tops available.

im from hawaii and my father makes ukuleles and for best sound the best wood would be KOA and for looks the best wood would be KOA.lol.Its sounds weired but its true. My father has been making ukuleles for almost 9 years and he sells them for $300.00+ depending on the size.
