Try to find something that can only result as a consequence of it, or try to figure out what such a thing would lead to and look for evidence for those things. These are hard to use in such a way to strictly prove the existence of something, but it can often lead to it being 'as good as proven' or 'as good as disproven' (a negligible margin of error).

If you already know you will never find what your looking for then why would you continue to look? It would have to exist at least in your mind if you feel the need to find it.

The classic unicorn conundrum. Since I cannot be everywhere on earth at the exact same moment, I cannot prove that unicorns do or don't exsist. However, I can prove statistically that they don't due to the number of people that have lived, the percentage of earth they have covered over many years, and no one has produced evidence.
