I did some research on it and according to everything I read and learned that splits are a good form of stretching to achieve a desired flexibility and to make one more successful in certain talents. Such as dancing, gymnastic, martial arts... Yoga instructor seem to encourage it. But also everything I read mentions that you must stay within your limitation or risk damage(harm). So this means it can improve your functions for leg movement. If you can stretch further you have fewer limitations. This can affect running, jumping, and any sport that requires flexibility of the legs. . But all in all it seems if you can manage to do the splits with out pain then it is beneficial!
