Why is the USA commonly considered the "crime capital of the world" if many european nations, and even canada have higher crime rates?

G'day What is my nickname, Thank you for your question. I think that it reflects the situation from the 1970's when crime was much worse in the US than in other places. It has gotten worse in other places such as Europe and better in the US. Crime is a dominant feature of US pop culture such as music and movies so that is an influence as well. Regards

I don't know about it being the crime capital of the world, maybe if you include white collar and look at it's history. Iceland should be the crime capital of the world. The United states does however have a higher homicide rate than most other industrialized countries nearly three times as much as Canada so that might be part of the reason as well. Who knows.

I think the reason is that we have the largest total percentage of population in criminal incarceration of any developed country.

If the USA has lower crime figures than Canada that must be because there are lies, damned lies and statistics.

The USA has had higher crime rates for many decades and although the crime rates may have fallen it is still higher than in European countries.

I have walked alone through many large Canadian Cities in the middle of the night without fear. I can say the same for London, Copenhagen, Oslo, Libson and Amsterdam. I can't say the same for many American Cities. I was attacked in San Diego, almost mugged in Fort Lauderdale and scared out of my wits in Boston. I don't know about crime rates but the only American City I've ever walked (I do a lot of walking) alone at night where I felt no fear was Austin, Texas. I tend to take cabs a lot in the States. Hope this helps.

I think It may have to do with our organized crime in politics. The leaders in the US are the biggest bunch of criminals in the world!

@ Nathan Explosion - You can`t view it in total population. Thats unfear, since USA is way more populated then any european countries. Each european countries is like states, just like you got states in USA. But not in the same way ofcourse. It's not so much the crime rate but rather its large prison population.
