French is a Romanic language. English and German are (West) Germanic languages. Romanic and Germanic languages are Indoeuropean languages. However, English has also had a much stronger Romanic influence than German. French is not Germanic, but it has a strong Germanic influence. In fact the name "France" comes from a Germanic people called the "Francs" who founded the Ile de France (the section where Paris is). This Germanic influence explains why the French R is so close to the German R and why the vowels in boeuf/leurs are so close to the German ö and why french U is the same as german y/ü
