  • Libraries and some internet cafes have a sign on system, as the other people have said. When you log off, it automatically erases your history. You can see this happening during the logging off action when you press the "log off" button, a screen will pop up (it looks like old school DOS) and you can even see it as it's erasing. This doesn't mean it gets erased from the server history. This is how they catch the bad people who looked at porn in libraries. They have the person's user id, time you logged in, what sites you accessed, etc. Here's a trick that I do because I am paranoid. I access one of my junk email accounts on hotmail then i log out. I close the window. After I log out of the computer, I log right back in about 1 minute later. I open up the internet, go back to hotmail, and if my email address is still there then it doesn't erase histories. Make sure the settings are set to "Always ask for my e-mail address and password" which is found on the hotmail homepage.
  • It depends on what kind of security your library has. If you have to log on to the computer in some way (by entering your library card number for instance) then you're probably safe. Most computer reservation systems clear the information from your session as soon as you log out, or nightly. Either way, libraries do not track what you view. The best way to find out what goes on at your library is to ask someone!
