Any online tax filing service offers you the service to compare joint vs. separate returns. Normally, if one of you earns a lot more than the other and you don't itemize (i.e. file standard deduction) filing a joint return is actually better. If you do find that is the case I'd go to an accountant and ask if you can file amendments to your previous year returns - this may be possible.

It's possible. In our situation, it's better for us to file jointly. Hubby would owe if we filed separately, and I'd have to pay no tax but would get no refund. Filing jointly, we get a small refund. There are many packages available that will let you try the different scenarios, so you can make the decision that is best for your situation. Good luck!
