That must have been Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller, which I read when I was 16. At about the same time, I read the Kin Ping Meh, a Chinese Love story from the middle ages (its title may be transcribed diffferently today).

this is hard, i have read so many books in the last 20 years. (10 a monthe X 12 months X 20 years = no wonder i'm going blind.) the book that sticks in my head the most was the claiming of sleeping beauty. not the first but the earliest i can remember the title of.

It was either East of Eden or The Godfather, I read them both the same summer, I just don't remember which was first.
