I did and I was just about to ask this question. It was really irritating last night when I had the lights out and I couldn't see what I was typing at times.

Yes, it's for earth hour, which is supposed to happen sometime today. Everyone is supposed to shut off all their lights for an hour or something, to help the environment. For more info, google it ;)

Yes, it was happening yesterday at google.co.uk. Now it's happening on plain old google.com It's to celebrate "Earth Hour" or some other nonsense, by "figuratively turning off the lights, and trying to set an example". Whoopee, it probably takes more power for my tower to display that black than to display the same old white.

yeah, i think they should change it more often - to different colours. Only on special occasions :)
