He was not captured. He died in Bertioga, Brazil in 1979 via either accidental drowning or having a stroke while swimming. He was buried in Embu das Artes under the name "Wolfgang Gerhard". He had been living between Paraguay and Brazil, being shielded by Nazis and Nazi sympathizers. "But the possibility of a hoax kept the case open for several years.
