  • Actually, the rise of Christianity had more to do with the "falling" of the traditional Greek & Roman gods than it did with the "falling" of the gods of Babylon & Egypt. The Romans conquered the Greeks, and the two societies shared the same set of goddesses and gods. The Romans then conquered Egypt (and Egypt's subject, Babylon) and their gods were either worshipped alongside the native gods, or combined with them. The Roman Emperor Constantine needed a way to overcome the power of the traditional Roman priesthoods, which were very wealthy and very politically strong. Constantine chose to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman empire, taking advantage of its structure (one priesthood, not many, for example; monotheism, not competing gods; etc.) to help unify his Empire, strip the old priesthoods of their wealth and influence, and use his declaration of a single God to concentrate power in one deity -- whose worship the Emperor controlled -- rather than have power scattered among many.
