  • I have perfect pitch, and so does my sister - but we are very different in this. My sister has INNATE perfect pitch. Basically, she was born with it, or acquired it at an early age. Our parents found this when she was 5, and Myrah (my sis, much older now) doesn't remember if she had it at an earlier age. She describes this as "seeing the color of the sound". Let's say you see an apple - the moment you see it you just KNOW if it is green or red. Same with her and sounds - she KNOWS exactly what pitch she's hearing, no matter if it's from piano, guitar or the dishwasher, for that matter. She sees music in colors - and enjoys it. Unfortunately, I wasn't born with that ability, and "color hearing" courses I tried didn't really help me. I ACQUIRED perfect pitch by learning relative pitch, then learning reference notes to compare with. Unlike my sister, i don't "see sound in colors", and this is more of a mental process for me, but now it just comes naturally for me, and I know each note I'm hearing (again - no matter on what instrument). If you want to read more, the best resource i found is http://www.reviewsnest.com/perfectpitch/ . They elaborate more about the differences between innate and acquired perfect pitch, and talk some about the leading courses. I hope this helped you. Jennifer Sedona H.
