Can a star be at two or more fusion states at the same time? For instance, fusing hydrogen in the outer layer and helium in the inner layer?

I always assumed that a star doesn't start burning helium until it's used all of it's hydrogen, but now that you mention it, I can't see a reason why it couldn't be using the heavier elements at the same time as it's using lighter ones.
