I guess it would depend on the context. If you're sitting in a bar and the bartender asks "Would you like a drink" I suppose it would be safe to assume he's talking alcohol. If your standing in front of the soft drink cooler at the Zippy Mart and ask "Do you want a drink" I would assume you mean a soft drink. If I have guests over and I know they like to drink I ask "Would you like a drink" and it means alcohol. If I don't know whether or not someone drinks I always ask "Would you like something to drink? I have water, OJ, soft drinks, beer, wine and hard stuff."

I always assume they are referring to alcohol.

Tis the tradition.

It depends on where it is. At the high school where I teach, if a teacher says he's going for a drink, it's alcohol. At the university where I teach, if a professor or support staff person says they're going for a drink, it's Pepsi.

I don't because usually if I'm asked if I want something to drink, the person will say " water, iced tea, a soft drink?" or "would you like some wine, beer or a mixed drink?" Usually the host/hostess will indicate what he/she is prepared to serve you.

Must be the crown you are around. When my friends and family say that we think soda, milk, water, and then maybe alcohol.
