• Kirababe, I just thought I would mention something about Bettas as I know you are an animal lover. Scientists have found in studies that keeping them in a bowl cuts their life span at least in half compared to a full fledged aquarium! I wasn't at all surprised to read such a thing - it makes perfect sense.

• Actually, I've learned just the opposite. Obviously, you don't want to keep them in a tiny bowl - at least a gallon or so. But in an aquarium that is too large, they can be very stressed out due to water currents as they have those beautiful long fins that can get tormented by strong water currents. Also, bettas actually have a lung like organ unlike most other fish that allows them to live in very poor water quality (which is how they tend to be found in the wild) and when there are low oxygen levels in the water, they simply are able to breathe from the surface. The technical name for this is a labriynth breather and gouramis also fall into this category. Cheers!

• Yes, I am well familiar with their ability to live in poor conditions. I also know that they don't do well in conditions that are not suited to them such as stronger currents. This was an actual scientific study with five gallon aquariums vs. the typical one gallon containers that pet shops promote. I don't remember whether or not I saved it (maybe I could find it if you are interested), but I think it was the largest ever Beta life-span study. In the tiny containers, life-span was found to be around three years on average. In the five gallon aquarium, I don't remember whether it was six or seven years. They also found some to life as long as eight, and some in the bowls made it four years.
  
  The researchers are not sure exactly why the cramped quarters cut their life-span in half. They thought it was possibly from so little movement (exercise) as the gallon jugs are so confined. Some also thought it could possibly be simply from boredom, and having so little to explore.

• I do realize it is much less convenient, expensive, etc., to give a Beta a "good" environment from a scientific view, and also from the ethical side of things. Like you, I am a big time animal lover (I seem to remember you commenting previously from a pro-animal view). From my point of view, the Beta's ability to live in poor conditions has doomed him to a very low quality of life. I had always assumed the small containers shorten life-span, and thought it so interesting to find it cuts it in half on average. Another thing to mention is that many don't keep their water temperature in the 77 to 82 degree range that they do best in.
  It sounds as though you are not at all influenced by the study, but I thought I would mention it as I always feel obligated to at least try to influence better conditions for any creature.
  I have a tough time with labyrinth (and did notice)hehe. Don't you hate when you hit post, then realize a second later?

• no that is interesting and of course i will look into it....hmmm i live in a one bedroom apartment and i have 6 of them, so i may need to rearrange a bit to fit 5, five-gallon tanks....but knowing me I'll probably end up doing it. and you have a point. i've owned many through the years and one lived to be 6 but the majority only lived to be about 3-4 years. thanks for the info!

• I'm impressed, and a bit surprised actually! Quite unusual for someone on AB to be open minded, but then again, I'm usually involved supplying the counterpoint to the anti-vegetarian, animals wouldn't be made out of meat if we weren't supposed to eat them, plants are sentient beings, and killing a cow is the same as pulling a carrot out of the ground crowd. If I find the study, I will post it here. Yours probably do tend to live longer than average as it sounds like you take good care of them. I'm sure one of the reasons pet shops prefer the small containers is they get to sell more of them.

• Kirababe, I haven't found that study yet (and it is one of those things that is bugging me, and I will try to stop bugging you until / if I find it), but here is an article that mentions a leading cause of Betta death to be fatty liver disease from inactivity. "there is no reason that spaciousness should stress or kill a betta. Indeed, a slightly larger tank, in the range of 2.5-10g (preferably 5g+), may even be beneficial; one of the leading killers of bettas is inadequate physical activity, resulting in fatty liver"
