What exactly do hallucinogenic drugs do to your brain that they can make you confuse a thumb tack for a cockroach?

have you ever fried an egg in a skillet? have you ever poured acid on your hands or gotten some hot pepper in your eyes or nose.? have you ever dropped a big brick on your toe? have you ever broken a finger or arm? had a serious cut or wound? what did you think about when these things happenned? hard to do calculus or algebra while someone is hitting you with a baseball bat!!! thats how your brain reacts to chemicals attacking it.

I'm really not sure in this one, so if someone could correct me, I'd appreciate it. I heard that things like LSD or shrooms temporarily enlarge your brain cells, therefore impeding their initial functions, it's like they're ''bumping'' into one another and can't go where they're supposed to go, causing many of the hallucinogenic effects. Apparently intense heat will do the same, which is why people will see mirages in the desert, or you see things or have messed up dreams when you have a really high fever.
