It is certainly one of the top four violin concertos, along with the Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky. But one of the best ever? That's a tough call. There are so many wonderful piano concertos: Brahms #1 and #2, Beethoven's 3rd and 5th, and all three Rachmaninoff. Those are the ones I'd want if I were stuck on a desert island.

Personally, I would not say it is, by any means, but that is a matter of personal taste. I can think of several violin concertos that I would regard as much greater, by Beethoven, Brahms, Elgar and Berg.
