  • Testing your water at a pet store pretty much tests for nitrates and ammonia and give you little evidence of what's going on in the tank. First of all, I would suggest reading about any pet you intend to buy BEFORE your purchase. You are taking about fish that require different environments to live. Gold fish are cold water fish and thrive in a non-heated tank with a bacterial system that is equiped with the means to deal with a lot of waste and ammonia (oddly enough an ammoinia remover in your filter does not help). A Pleco is a freshwater fish and needs a very different environment, one with a steady bacterial cycle, proper filtration and a maintained temperature. They are typically sold at 3 inces and can grow up to 2 feet. Decide first which kind of tank you want, Coldwater, freshwater or saltwater, then visit your local library and pick up a book or 2 on how to maintain that type of tank. ALSO - General rule of thumb for goldfish is 1 inch of fish per 2 gallons of water. For freshwater it's one inch of fish per gallon of water.
