As of this moment, higher clock speeds make a bigger difference than slow chips with more cpu's. But this shall change as games progress towards multi-threading. EXAMPLE: 3.0 GHz DUAL CORE = $200 2.2 GHz QUAD CORE = $200 Your game will only run on one CPU leaving the others with little to do. So for gaming 3.0GHz is better than 2.2 GHz. For applications like video editing, photoshop, data encryption, or other encode/decode applications the slower quad core will provide better performance. Like I said, the trend will change in about 2-3 years. More games will be taking advantage of multicore CPUs. For now get the fastest highest GHz processor you can buy regardless of how many cores it has. By the time you need quad core you'll be able to upgrade to a 3.2GHz quad for maybe $75.
