In auto racing, a crew chief is the head person on a pit crew. He is kind of like a head coach in other professional sports. The crew chief's primary duties include developing car setups, configuring pit strategies, and receiving feedback from his driver about the car's handling.

If you need something done, go to the car chief. The car chief is the person who works closely with the crew chief in figuring out setups for the car, but is the actual guy who makes sure it gets done.
