*chokes Spaceball* I've always wanted to do that to someone that uses "axe" and "ask" interchangeably.
-
NO! Axed isnt acceptable as Asked. It bothers me so much wen ppl come into my office saying that they "axed" me this or that. errrrrrrrrrrrr
-
It's not generally acceptable. It's an abuse of the English language.
-
It's generally okay because most people don't even notice when they say it, or when the person speaking to them says it. I always do, but when I correct them they usually get mad as if I've insulted them or something.
-
no, it's not okay in my mind. Though, I live in Canada, where we don't really do that. However, we will sometimes replace asked with enquired.
-
Who cares. It's like when people bitch that Google isn't a verb.
-
Generally speaking, when someone is axed..there is usually a lot of blood and possible loss of limbs involved. It is like people who say they instead of their.. they house, rather than their house and when they say "I borrowed it to them"..you LOANED it to them, you jackass. GRRRRRR...okay..I am going to get myself a bowl of banella ice cream, now...have some left over from Valentimes day.
-
No.....it also appears to be acceptable on Jerry Springer and the Maury Povich shows too.
-
It is NEVER ok to say 'axed' if you mean to say 'asked'. It's an 'Ebonics" expression, as well as a Northeastern (Brooklyn/Bronx) white trash coloquiolism.
-
It depends on who you are. I, personally, find it unacceptable and annoying as all get out. The stereotype is that uneducated people say "axed"...while educated people are irritated by the reality of just how wrong that is.
-
It is a dialect peculiar to several small communities. It originated in England, and traveled to the US. If it is your natural dialect - use it. If you are faking it - don't.
