It's just coincidence, because there are just as many stars who are quite tall.
-
This is a good question, I've thought the same thing. Like singers with big voices, and they are almost 5'.
-
Ha. I didn't know Paul Newman was short. How tall is he?
-
All the people you mentioned are older..I believe people are getting taller through the generations..better nutrition, more exercise..hundreds of years ago people were much smaller. There are a lot of tall movie stars as well..it evens out..then there are the humongously tall basketball players and now humongously tall tennis players. Soon we shall be a world of giants! :)

I think it's a coincidence. Like the fact that John Wayne was actually a bit on the short side. There are tall actors like Tim Robbins and the very short like Al Pacino and Lynn whitfield.
-
Ummm.... Short people are just the same as you and I. All men are brothers until the day they die.

I think it's just a coincidence. What I do find amusing is that a lot of shorter actors were made to stand on boxes to appear taller than their female co-stars. Or they were shot from an angle to make them appear taller. Like Mel Gibson in "The Year of Living Dangerously" with Sigourney Weaver. She is nearly 6 feet tall, but in the movie, he is shot to appear taller. Hollywood has or at least, used to have some strange idea that male stars must be taller than their female co-stars.

Less food to have catered to the set.

Smaller, as in thinner, is more photogenic. But when it comes to movie stars who are thin, we can attribute that to long workouts and better food that's expensive and harder to find. And don't forget, they get special makeup that we joe shmoes can't hope to attain. That makeup can erase pretty much all blemishes. And by erase, I mean true coverage. But shorter? Not really. The most photogenic are still supermodels (most of them), and even I am short compared to those Amazons.

There are also many stars that are tall, so it's probably just a coincidence.
