Yes! I found out just the other day that Americans weren't familiar with this particular one. Its a bit ruder than bloody as it derives its origins from "sodomy" (obviously) and thus has certain sexual connotations, but is still not on the same level as the F-word. Its quite coommon to hear say, a mother jokingly call her teenage son "A cheeky sod", or hear someone at work say "I'm sick of this sodding computer" , and few people would bat an eyelid. I'm not so sure that there is a US equivalent really. Calling someone a git is quite close to calling them a sod though.
