They may LOOK the same but if you actually picked them up and played them you'd notice the difference in the quality. Get the Fender. Squiers suck and aren't good instruments at all.

On the other hand, if you buy a Fender, you are paying for the name in addition to the bass, and the good Fenders are increasingly rare. If this isn't your first bass, I would recommend saving your money a little while longer and ordering a custom bass from Chris Stambaugh. He makes some of the best basses in the world and has the lowest prices of any custom luthier. (Wishbass doesn't count.) If it is your first bass, an Ibanez GSR200 is a good bet. It will cost you just under $200 and it's much better than what Fender is making these days. And it will last you until you can order your Stambaugh!

Squier is a more entry-level version of Fender (think low-end Epiphone to Gibson).

A squier bass is actually by fender. It's a second line, focused on providing high quality at an affordable price. I have the squier affinity, and I love it. I guess it doesn't help that I kind of fell in love with it, but hey. It's a good learners bass, but it's also a good one for regular playing too. I'm not saying it's a strat, but for what it is, it is a pretty good bass. If you can afford to go for a fender jazz, or a custom made even, I'd say go do that.
