Why do some firms that claim 'Equal Opportunities' insist on you giving details of your ethnic background on application forms? Surely this is irrelevant if a candidate is to be selected merely on merit?

Some companies will track these things for stats. I saw some graphs a while back on the ethnicity, age, and gender balance of the company I work at. I think they get concerned if they notice things going too far in any one direction, or if they notice they're turning down a large number of (insert group here) candidates.

Unhhhhh, DUH, the form is VOLUNTARY. If you want the job, why worry about it!!! Maybe we're seeing if you can follow directions, but since its VOLUNTARY to answer that, my guess would be thats a MOOT point

No companies REQUIRE this information on an application. It is optional. However, when you are hired, this can change.

I usually don't answer those questions . I feel it's irrelevant.
