No place is exactly how it's portrayed on TV, especially most travel shows.
-
There are parts that fit the TV mold perfectly but like anyplace in the world, there is always something else if you go looking for it. You can and will island flair and fun and sun though and you don't have to look to far or too hard to find it.
-
No, it is only on the resorts. The rest of the country is poverty stricken, they need the money brought in from tourists to survive.

I went to the Bahama's and it is better then what they portray on TV.

it is around the beach/tourist areas like resorts and whatnot. but get away and into the cities where the "regular" people live, and its pretty yucky. i went on a missions trip there. most of the places i went were pretty poor (think squatters villages in mexico, but just a bit better). its sad, really. most of the revenue from the tourist areas don't go to the bahamian gov't because they're owned by american businesses. you would think that the US gov't would work to change this somehow since its an american territory, but no...

No.. the resorts are gorgeous. The rest of the island is eh.. not so much so. :)
-
The parts that the tourists see are beautiful but like all the islands the lives for the natives and the life outside of tourist areas is usually much harder and the natives are very poor. The Bahamas is probably better off than most of the islands.

What people fail to understand is that The Bahamas is more that just ONE or a few island so when you go to the "city" you will not get to experiecnce the true Bahamian culture ... The Bahamas is like any other country it has its ghettos which just happen to be a bit closer to the tourist areas than most .... Bay Street, Paradise Island and Cable Beach all on the island of NEW PROVIDENCE not in the CITY of Nassau are for tourist. Try going to The other 700 islands and cays that we have and then comment ..... not angry with anyone but my governement because what the advertise is not what you get .... the BEST beaches are on the Family Islands and they rip tourist off by selling them Nassau the city and not the other island that are TRUE paradises on earth .... i love my home but i would suggest that if any one was to visit The Bahamas they should google a map of it and choose anyother island to go to other than NEW PROVIDENCE (Nassau) & GRAND BAHAMAS (Freeport)
