Put a pie tin in the ground so the edge is level with the surface. Pour in some beer, until it is almost full. (yes, beer) The snails and/or slugs will drink it, fall in, and drown. Scoop them out and throw them away. Yes, this really works. I've had gardens all my life.

I have an outdoor fish pool...it is surrounded by concrete...One day when feeding the fish I spilled fish food (pellets) on the cement..it rained lightly that evening...I couldn't believe what happened next..every slug came from miles around...100's of them..and just to eat the fish food on the damp concrete...after that I would just put fish pellets on top of the wet concrete..It was relatively easy to just scoop up all these slugs and get rid of them...Since slugs and snails are so closely related It might work for snails as well...

Pie plate full of beer will attract them at night and they will drown. I few nights of that and that should take care of it without any bad harmful chemicals
