  • I love my Detroit, and wouldn't trade it for the world. Detroits are finicky in some areas, like getting air in the fuel system, but once you get the kinks worked out they are dependable, efficient, and powerful engines. Parts are cheaper in comparison to the other big makes, and they're easy to work on. Of course, my Detroit is in a Freightliner, so maybe you might want to discount my opinion:) Quite frankly, I see no real difference between any make or model of engine or truck. If it runs and the price is right, I'll take it. The same goes for cars too. I think that you find more Detroit questions here for a couple of reasons. For one thing, they are the most prolific engine out there, as with Freightliners, because of their popularity with the larger fleets. The majority of them, currently, are showing up as used fleet trucks that have been sold a'la Select Truck. I rarely see these types of problems with trucks that might be considered "O/O spec'd." Purchasers of such trucks are generally new to the industry (at least, to being an O/O) and buying their trucks for the first time. They are unfamiliar with the workings of big trucks in general, and find themselves dealing with the problems that might come with a used fleet truck that may or may not have been treated very well to begin with. I think this gives Detroits, and Freightliners in general, a bad name, even though the fault doesn't necessarily lie with the reliability of the truck or engine. That impression is probably the same thing that has led you to ask this question. Same goes for the purchasers. The next truck they buy probably will be a KW or Pete.
  • the 60 series are good engines. the real problem is companies cut them back on the assumption that will save fuel then the drivers run them constantly on the floor, never letting the engines breathe.
  • Sure, red engine if you want to have constant egr and other emissions control related problems, and yellow engine if you want to get 4 mpg and enjoy the high cost of maintanance and repair. Sounds like a winner to me
  • one of the reasons people are writing in w/ detroit problems is most of theses people are driving used trucks..trucks that were once fleet trucks and freightliner flooded the market w/ detroit powered freightliners . the best engines were white..(1693 cat,.3408 cat)
