Break point occurs when you are one point away from winning a game in which your opponent is the server. This matters because the serve is a big advantage in tennis. It is the only shot whose direction, speed and spin are completely controlled by one player, the server. Especially at higher skill levels, it is assumed the server will win each game. When the receiver wins, or "breaks", he or she becomes the server for the next game, and the odds are good for winning it as well to end up two games to the better. Remember that in tennis, one must win a set by two games, so a service break can mean all the difference. A player who has "broken" the server in this way is said to be "up a break". If you're down a set an a break, you'd better get cracking.
