Mace is a brand name. There are pepper spray varieties of Mace, but there are also other types of Mace sprays. So, it depends on which type of spray you have as to what does the most damage or hurts the most.

Mace is pepper spray, enhanced. Mace Triple Action combines pepper spray, tear gas and UV Ultra-Violet dye for an all-out assault on any would-be attacker. The pepper spray is made from hot cayenne peppers, the active ingredient being oleoresin capsicum (OC). Pepper spray is an inflammatory agent that causes temporary blindness and difficulty breathing, which can last up to 90 minutes. Tear gas is an irritant that induces coughing, while the dye, referred to as UV Ultra-Violent for its color purple, stains the attacker for later identification.

Actually, the effects can last longer than 90 minute...several hours. AND it's reactivated when you take a shower.

usually, "Pepper spray" is the maximum concentration allowed by law of Oleoresin Capsicum (the stuff that sends people home crying to their mommy's)
traditional "Mace" is a type of tear gas agent that is now illegal in most wester countries.

I just got pepper sprayed 2 hours ago. I'm a very heavy smoker and I thought I was going to die. I could not breathe and VERY fortunately I found a GOOD samaritan to forcefully wash my eyes for around 20 minutes with cold very cold mineral water (for whatever money I had in my pocket, around $30). If you are in good health, you will probably have difficulty seeing but if you are a heavy smoker you will have serious trouble breathing and the initial 30 minutes will make you think that you are going to die. Burning sensations all over your body will persist post spraying, including hands, legs, ears, throat etc, Initial response is is helplesslness and total BLINDNESS. Extremely scary and dangerous experience. If you get pepper sprayed make sure you get revenge because heavy smokers or asthma patients MAY die from being pepper sprayed. If you got pepper sprayed and did not die, get your revenge today AND pepper spray the person who sprayed you with his own spray as long as it is not an officer of the law.

By all mean, if you are extremely drunk and you have lost something like money or a mobile phone in a nightclub, do not fight the people dragging you out or it will result in a potentially lethal pepper spraying which is simply not worth it. Return to the place when you are sober. (Pepper spray will sober you up but your whole body will burn like hell for hours)
