My hubby and I have an aquarium maintenance company. Frequently we take aquariums in trade when clients are stepping up in size. What you have described sounds like hard water deposits. For this we use a diluted muriatic acid solution. This is a VERY caustic acid so follow all directions concerning safety. It will eat holes in your skin and clothing if it makes contact, but it works better and more quickly than any other product. Mix the muriatic acid 20 to 25% with tap water in a common garden spray bottle. Make sure the bottle is new. Don't use an empty Windex bottle. Mist the glass and allow the diluted solution to sit for 10 to 20 mins, then rinse thoroughly with hot water. If this works the first time, then rinse a couple more times. If not, repeat the process until the deposits are gone.
