  • Have you checked out the bulbs?
  • If the 3rd brake light works, that confirms the switch and fuse is good. You will need to check the bulbs, if they are good, then the most likely cause would be the turn signal switch. The power that feeds the brake lights has to go through the turn signal switch first then back to the brake light bulbs. The 3rd brake light is powered directly off the brake light switch and doesnt have to go through the turn switch. Sometimes you can wiggly the hazard button on the steering column and the brake light will come on for a moment. The turn signal switch is also the wiper and hazard switch, called the "Multifunction switch". That is a very common failure and a very common complaint.
  • i have the exact same problem and have been trying to figure it out for weeks now so bravo to travel tech.. so question is now how do i fix it? or do i have to go to the dealer and have a new multi function switch put in?
  • This repair could be performed at home, however you would have to remove the air bag and pull the steering wheel. A steering wheel puller may be needed because steering wheels often are hard to get off. Once that is done then the AIR Bag clock spring will need to be removed and you will be able to replace the Multi-function switch. You could do this at home, but i would advise using a ASE Certified repair shop or the Dealer. Good luck , TravelTech
  • I have had the same problem with my 2000 Cavalier. My solution was in playing with the brake switch plug under the dash. If the plug is pushed in fully, it seems to go past the connectors in the plug and outlet. If I back the plug out until the lock mechanism on the plug and outlet meet(as if I'm trying to unplug it), it solves my problem. But I do have to monitor it as driving vibrations will eventually separate the connection.
