No... Caruso hsa looked like that for years. I think the character was written specifically for David Caruso. He's not overly emotional in the way he acts (I remember from NYPD Blue), but they do a good job of making sure it at least appears he's emotional when it's needed. Actually, I can't think of anyone else who could play Caine as written except Caruso.
