To foster communication, maybe validation and / or get another point of view.

To be totally honest, so I know what I really want. I have a hard time making decisions... so I ask my husband, "Red or blue?" If he says "red" and I have second thoughts, I know I really wanted blue. If you ask a woman the same thing... it leads to a million questions "What is it for? What are the surrounding colours? What shoes will you wear with this?" Boys are MUCH easier. One word answer, problem solved.

I know you asked the ladies but I had to butt in since I am a butt-head. Women like people to listen. They don't usually want answers. Men always try to problem solve and fix things even when it isn't wanted.

If I decide to ask for my partners opinion or anyone else's for that matter it is because I genuinely would like their opinion and I will listen and then decide what I want to do, if I am just going to do what I want to do then I will do so without asking.
