It's a tribute to that player's child. Luis Garcia, a Spanish player who plays his club football at Liverpool is perhaps the most famous for this celebration. He sucks his thumb after every goal he scores as a tribute to his first-born son Joel. The "thumb sucking" celebration is a slight departure from the often used "rock the baby" cradle motion that most players use to dedicate a goal they've scored to their newborn child. Bebeto has been credited for this type of celebration when he scored for Brazil against Cameroon in the 1994 World Cup, although the famous image often seen is his celebration after his goal against Holland a week later when his teammates Romario and Mazinho joined him in celebration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLyKH8JhPdw

I have traveled all around the world, and in many countries a thumb in mouth translates to:"it's nothing" and im quite certain this is why many footballers do it after the score a goal.

If it's because they have children, why did Fernando Torres do it after scoring a goal in the Euro 2008 Final just yesterday? According to the Internet, he doesn't have a kid.

i always thought it meant its like taking candy from a baby

Yes to all of you comments it can mean dedication to ones child but when someone does it like Torres it means basicly it means it was so easy a baby could do it or its nothing whatever represents the goal being scored with ease thats what it means most of the time
