  • If they don't try to pass themselves off as some sort of moral guardian, I don't care what a politician does in his/her personal life. Unfortunately, so many politicians are of the "do as I say, not as I do" school, which makes them such hypocrites that they lose all credibility with me. I assume you're referring to New York Governor Elliot Spitzer (ptooey!), but it applies to such people as the Clintons, as well.
  • I suppose it can to a degree. But lets face it, we all react differently at work to that when we are at home. And remember none of us a perfect. Sometimes you need to forgive or should all the time and give the person a gap.
  • Very little. E.g., marital infidelity wouldn't be a deal breaker for me unless the candidate was my SO. I'd vote for JFK over Nixon any day but if all higher considerations were equal then I'd vote for the more faithful SO, e.g. world-renowned "celibate" Ralph Nader. ;)
  • When faced with such a situation I find that reality comes in quite handy ; ) If they have done well in the past, the present, and have plans for the future, it doesn't matter how messed up their personal life is because 'clearly', as reality shows, it doesn't influence their political work. If it's clear that it does influence their work, then clearly, as reality shows, it influences their work : P It's something to determine on a case-by-case basis based on the politicians actual work, not their personal life.
  • I don't put to much weight on their personal lives, I want to see what they do as an elected official.
  • It really depends on what's going on in their personal life. As in celebrities, a lot of what they do ends up being opened up to the public and sometimes it makes a mockery of what they claim to stand for, they say one thing and do another. But that is usually par for the course when it comes to politicians anyway.
  • if they hold an important position, like governor or president for instance, maybe it would be better to stay focused on the job instead of polishing their knob...partying and running around is not conducive to taking care of business, those positions require someone dedicated to the office and the people who rely on them instead of their joystick, i personally don't give a crap about the private life but if you check the most successful atheletes or politicians they stick to the business at 'hand', ha, ha, ha...
  • let's see, if the politician came up to me and said that they are concerned about their personal life and required my help, then I would gladly provide it.... otherwise, i don't concern myself with it as I'm not capable of judging it and neither are those who present it....
  • Well, since you are speaking of Spitzer, considering that a good portion of his career as a prosecuter he spent prosecuting prostitution rings I think that it makes a big difference on how they take care of business. It means he's a hypoctrite. What else is he lying about? What else has he taken the stance 'Do as I say, not what I do'? Shouldn't politicians be held to a higher standard? If they are the ones governing us and imposing and making the laws shouldn't they be the first to follow them? If a politician breaks the law then they get NO respect from me whatsoever. That is why there are no politicians out there that I respect.
