Hey Man, sounds like you need a driver for that hard drive, so your xbox picks it up as a memory card.
download action replay xbox from this link,
http://us.codejunkies.com/support.asp?c=US&cr=&cs=&r=1&l=
(in the downloads column on the left)
then install it and go to the place you installed it (usually c:programfiles:datel:actionreplayxbox) go into the action replay xbox file and you should see a file called xbreader.inf, open it in notepad, now while this is still open, go to the start menu and right click on my computer (assuming you have xp) and click properties, click the hardware tab, and go to device manager, now pug the hd into your xbox, you should see a message that says: this memory device is not formatted, it has been erased, or something like that. now plug it into your computer, now select it in device manager, make sure its the right one, if you have multiple mass storage devices plugged in, to check, pull the hd out and see which ohne dissapears from the list in device manager, in device manager it should be under the menu: universal serial bus controllers. okay now right click the hd in device manager and click properties, now go to details tab, you should see a line kind of like this:
USBVID_058F&PID_93609205291
copy the vid and the pid and the 4 digits besite them to a word doc
now back to the xbreader file you opened in notepad. scroll down in the document and you should see a heading called devices now the first line should have a line like you saw in device manager, example :
USBVID_056h&PID_945g9205291
change the first line (and only the first line)
to the vid and pid digits that you got from your hd in device manager. just replace the ones in xbreader with the 4 digits beside vid and pid on the hd, now save the document xbreader.inf
now go to device manager again and right click the hd, choose update driver, choose no, then install from list or specific location, then dont search, i will choose, then have disk, browse, and go into where action replay xbox is installed, into drivers and choose xbreader.inf, then maxdrive xbox should come up, install the driver to your hd and now the xbox will recognise it as a memory card, so you can save all you want on it.
Hope this helps, Cheers :D
I have a modified xbox. Today I turned it on and the hard drive sounded like it was trying to start but would make a click sound and then try to start again. It just repeats this cycle until the screen says something about my xbox needing serv

You're reading Can I use a 2nd HD on a softmodded Xbox? I have a second hard drive for my Xbox and it's hooked up via USB. It recognizes the drive, but says it's not formatted, and won't let me format it.
Comments
would it be possible to save games on that hard drive with a softmod, or would it just hold game saves? wat is the maximum size that the hard drive could be? I would like to buy a thin 60 gig or bigger hd and load isos onto it with qwix and play those games, so i dont have to burn dvds.

yeh, you can save games on it if you have modded xbox software, and basically it could be any size you want.
