  • I guess Kubrick's "2001" passes as art film and still has some kind of plot at least.
  • Some of Polanski's older films like "Repulsion" are pretty artsy and surreal. I also highly recommend any of Bergman's films, particularly "The Seventh Seal" and "Wild Strawberries". Or you could watch a pure performance art piece like the Cremaster Cycle. You could also go for the more lighter attempts at art film, like the Monkees' "Head".
  • Amelie.
  • Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It" is on the border between an art film and a movie, so it is a good start.
  • Police Academy 6.
  • Anything by Luis Bunuel would be a great start. The most disturbing is probably the marvelous film "Un chien andalou" from 1928, with the famous and almost unbearable scene where an eye is cut with a razorblade. Other great directors who could be considered as art film directors might be Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Jim Jarmusch or Aki Kaurismäki
